FINDING YOUR FLOW 🌊
You know I like to wax poetic about Pilates (it’s my thing!), but today I want to talk about the truly awesome, sacred, and ancient art of yoga. Yoga began in India, dating back over 5,000 years. It’s a physical and philosophical practice aimed at uniting the mind, body, and spirit. It evolved through various traditions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism, before making its way to the West in the 19th and 20th centuries, where it became widely popular as a holistic approach to physical and mental well-being.
I was first introduced to yoga in high school through the 90s sitcom Dharma & Greg. Dharma, the free-spirited, quirky yoga teacher, embodied the 'yoga person' stereotype - zen, laid-back, and a bit unconventional. Back then, yoga seemed like something only hippies or eccentric types did, but I was intrigued. As a budding theatre geek and aspiring New Yorker, I was psyched the day my gym teacher turned out the lights and popped in a yoga video and I got to be like Dharma. I remember watching and clumsily following the moves of a group of women in sky-blue leotards as they practiced on sand dunes. I think we need to start bringing those French-cut leotards back 🤔
Fast forward to today, and yoga in the West has evolved far beyond its 'eccentric' roots - it’s now embraced by everyone from professional athletes to busy parents. Athletes, in particular, turn to yoga to improve flexibility, balance, and recovery. It helps them prevent injuries by loosening tight muscles and enhances their overall performance by increasing range of motion and mental focus.
Yoga isn’t just for the young and fit, it’s fantastic for seniors too. Gentle movements and emphasis on stretching make it a safe and effective way to maintain mobility and balance, reducing the risk of falls and joint issues. Plus, the mindfulness aspect of yoga supports mental clarity and stress reduction, which is just as important as physical strength as we age.
Yoga is also a great way to teach calming techniques to children. Kids today face so many distractions and stressors (hello, phones), and introducing them to mindfulness through yoga can help them manage their emotions, improve concentration, and build healthy habits early on. It’s a lifelong tool that benefits every generation, showing that yoga is so flexible (pardon the pun), it really is for everyone.
Figuring out the right yoga class can seem daunting, especially when every style offers its own unique benefits. It’s all about finding what aligns with your goals, energy level, and where you are in life. Let’s break down the different options we offer at The Pearl to help you discover your ideal flow.

This 7am class is for early birds, offering a gentle yet energizing way to greet the day. It focuses on slow, deliberate movements that stretch and strengthen, allowing you to move into your day with purpose and calm. I find that this class sets the tone for a focused, centered day. The mindful flow lets you ease into your body and practice while the rest of the world is just waking up - what a gift to start the day like that! Vinyasa Flow - Amy, Emma, Joann
Looking for a balanced class that offers a bit of everything? Vinyasa Flow is your go-to. It’s an all-levels class that moves through sequences combining strength, flexibility, balance, and breathwork. It’s a great choice if you’re unsure of what kind of class you need but know you want to get moving. I’ve found that Vinyasa Flow brings just the right amount of challenge and calm, leaving you feeling accomplished but not wiped out.
Yoga Sculpt - Amy, Emma, Stephanie, & Joann
Sculpt brings in light weights and resistance training to your practice. It’s great for those who want to combine traditional yoga postures with strength training, making for a full-body workout. Think of it as Vinyasa Flow’s more intense, athletic cousin. When I first tried this, I was surprised at how the combination of weights and breathwork intensified the practice. But I also loved the way it pushed me to discover strength I didn’t know I had. This class is best for those with some previous yoga experience.
Candlelight Restorative - Emma
If you're like me and have had those days where you just need to melt into the mat and let go, Candlelight Restorative might become your new favorite. This class offers a quiet, gentle practice focused on rest and recovery, using props like bolsters and blankets to support long, deep stretches. One of my favorite things about this class is how it allows the body to fully relax, giving you the space to release tension and stress. It’s at 8pm, so when you’re done, roll off the mat, stumble home, and climb right into bed for an incredible night’s sleep.
Restore + Meditate - Amy
Restore + Meditate is a 75-minute combined class designed to help you unwind and find tranquility through gentle, slow-paced yoga poses and guided meditations. Each restorative pose is held for an extended period, allowing your body to release tension and restore balance. Throughout the class, Amy will guide you through beginner-friendly meditation techniques, incorporating breathing exercises and visualizations to enhance mental clarity and inner calm. The session includes smaller meditations interspersed with restorative poses and culminates in an extended, meditative Savasana. Whether you're new to meditation or seeking a peaceful retreat from the hustle of daily life, Restore + Meditate offers the perfect escape.

Perinatal Yoga - Nicole
Motherhood brings its own set of challenges - both physical and emotional. Whether you're pregnant or postpartum, Perinatal Yoga at The Pearl is designed to support moms through every phase. With an experienced instructor who’s also a doula, you can trust that you’re in good hands. This class is all about listening to your body and finding movements that support both strength and relaxation. And the best part? You can even bring your pre-walking little one along postpartum - no need to worry about leaving them behind!
Little Yogis & Young Yogis - Stephanie
Watching my four-year-old do yoga is one of the most heartwarming and cutest possible ways to spend an afternoon. Without fail, my eyes well up listening to the kids talk about what color their heart-light is (“pink and black stripes with sparkles”). Our kids’ yoga classes are for two age groups, Little Yogis for 3 to 6 year olds, and Young Yogis for 7 to 11. Little Yogis introduces basic yoga poses through stories, games, and creative activities. Designed to nurture physical well-being and foster mindfulness, the class encourages children to explore movement, balance, and relaxation in a fun and supportive environment. Young Yogis explores various yoga poses, breathing exercises, and mindfulness techniques to promote physical health and emotional balance. Through engaging games and creative exploration, kids learn valuable tools for managing stress and enhancing concentration.
Choosing the right yoga class isn’t about pushing yourself into something that doesn’t fit. It's about finding what resonates with you at that moment. The Pearl offers such a variety because we know that no two people (or two days) are the same. Whether you’re a seasoned yogi or just dipping your toes in, there’s a place for you here. We’d love to see you on the mat - no matter which class you choose!
